Watch This Making Scratch Built Rivets

Watch This: Making Scratch Built Rivets

For anyone scratch building a tank, or even modifying a section of 40k scenery, rivets are a common way to add interest to an otherwise plain sheet of plastic. But making hundreds of rivets can be a pain. This is why I like the TinkerTerrain’s tutorial on making scratch built rivets. In his video, he shows how he made nice looking rivets with a mechanical pencil and a candle. The video is only 5 minutes long, and he does an excellent job of showing each of the steps. For those who like to read on the go or want a quick cheat sheet, see my notes on the video after the jump. Scratch Built Rivets with TinkerTerrain Steps to Making Rivets Preparation Grab a 0.9mm mechanical pencil and remove the eraser May need to drill out the end cap as well Insert 0.88mm rod from Evergreen or Plastruct Light a candle (note here on fire safety and breathing fumes of melting plastic!) Have a hobby knife on hand Making the Rivet Two clicks of the pencil will push enough plastic through …

How to Paint Ironjawz Brute by Em

Watch This: Painting Red Ironjawz featuring Em

Yes, I like greenskins so it is hard to pass up videos featuring them. Especially as I’m trying to finish my Dread Mob and start the Ork Blood Bowl Team. What I like about Em’s tutorial on painting these red Orruk Ironjawz Brutes is how simple each step is, yet the finished model looks great. Below I embed the video from Warhammer TV where Em steps through each part of the miniatures and gives some great tips from using different types of washes to highlighting the bone spikes with lines. I’ve tried to gather as many of these notes as I could below for those who like to read along to wanted to quickly grab all the colors she used. Quick note: I am using this video and notes without permission, but wish to share this great tutorial and provide my own thoughts to it. In no way do I claim any copyrights to the video or any of Games Workshop’s trademarked colors below. Watch How to Paint Ironjawz Orruk Brutes My Notes First I’m going …

How to do Wet Blending Video Tutorial by AG Productions

Watch This: Wet Blending

Blending is the technique of transitioning one color of paint to another, with wet blending being a particular style that involves adding layers while the paint is still wet. In today’s Watch This, I feature AG Productions’ video on wet blending. While the hot thing lately is to use airbrushes to create super smooth blends and highlights, wet blending has been around for a long time. It works great for those who like to use brushes or in tight spots that an airbrush would be difficult to get in to. So check out the video below or skip to my notes where I break down his steps and tips for making the most of your wet blending. Watch How to Do Wet Blending Wet Blending Overview Here are my notes from AGP’s video on how to do wet blending. He is painting a Carnosaur with a fade from white to yellow to purple that looks incredible. Focus on small sections of the model at a time Use features on the model to break up where …

Watch how to paint books and freehand text

Watch This: Painting Books

The Silver Tower came with a lot of books, but they are a common addition to Librarians, Grey Knights, Wizards, and all sorts of book lovers. Some seem some amazingly done books and parchments done by awards winning painters. For the rest of us getting started with it, Victor Ques made a nice video on painting books. This how-to guide to painting books doesn’t get fancy or use an airbrush. In fact, Victor only uses a few colors to achieve a fantastic result. Check out his video and then some more of my notes below. (note: there is a section in the middle where he almosts moves off screen, but just for a moment) Painting Books by Victor Notes Pretty simple right? Basically, paint the main colors, wash to provide depth and wear, and then a bit of fine brushwork – probably the hardest part. But with anything in our hobby, after a bit of practice, it becomes easier to do. Let’s go back through his steps: Base Colors Paint book cover Mornfang Brown Paint pages …

Watch This: Painting Tablescapes from Secret Weapon Miniatures

Watch This: Painting Tablescapes from Secret Weapon Miniature

Another new video is ready for Watch This series, this week is with Designer Warfare and painting Tablescape Tiles from Secret Weapon Miniatures. He paints up a few sections of the Urban Road (Clean and Damaged) with his airbrush for our enjoyment. I’ve been looking at picking up some of these Tablescape Tiles for my own gaming table and found this video super helpful. I hope you enjoy his fairly quick video on painting the streets and check out my cheat sheet notes below for later reference. Quick Reference for Painting Tablescapes Due to the manufacturing, some tiles may have variations in the plastic color Doesn’t affect the physical nature and is easily covered in primer (large plastic injection molding is hard and can leave harmless ‘sunbursts’ in plastic) Prime each tile with Grey Primer Use Model Air Pale Blue Grey, focusing on the sidewalk areas Keep some variation in the spray to add interest in each tile Avoid the cracks and recesses Paint craters with Army Painter Oak Brown Start at center of each and …

Watch This: Airbrush for Beginners

Complete newbie to using an airbrush? Yeah me too, I’ve used Games Workshop’s sad attempt at making one to base coat some models but dream of doing more with a nice brush. This week’s Watch This returns to Orc Painter Nerd and his great tutorial on using an airbrush for beginners. Double bonus for this week! This week’s Watch This is a two part video with the first going over the basics of how to use an airbrush and part two on using it to paint an actual model. So make sure to watch both videos and check out the notes. Watch This: Airbrush for Beginners by OrcPainterNerd Part 1: Airbrush Basics Highlights Not enough time to watch the full video or just like text notes? I’ve broken down OrcPainterNerd’s tips below for handy reference. Connect everything up before turning the compressor on Turn on compressor and adjust pressure (he is using 20PSI) Use thinned paint, smaller needle = more thinner needed Add airbrush paint to paint holder in airbrush, only a few drops needed …

Watch This: Painting White

If you struggle painting white on your models, check out this week’s Watch This video. Here we have Dave G. from Wargaming Tradecraft showing you his method of painting this notoriously difficult color. So without further ado, check out Dave’s video but check out my notes below. Painting White Using Layers Steps for Painting White After watching the video myself I’ve put together my set of notes on his technique. I hope this cheat sheet can be useful as a handy reference to his video. First Dave gives a fantastic set of tips for watering down paints: Add a blob of paint to your brush Dip only the tip of the brush (covered in the blob) into some water Mix them together on your palette This provides a nice mix without added too much water to the layers, something I often struggle with. He has some great pictures showing this as well so catch his full article. Moving into the layering white: (first few steps not shown in video) Spray white primer over the model Wash the whole …

Watch This: Sculpting Spines

Watch This is a regular series where I find a YouTube video that shows neat tricks or tips for our hobby. From painting, building, or photography, I will be looking for great videos for you to watch and write up a brief summary of the steps used. This week’s Watch This is on Sculpting Spines from Mr. Pink. He shows how he adds an external spine to kit-bashed Grotesque. While not something many of us would need to add onto our models, the techniques he shows should be helpful for many sculpting projects. His Process Add a dab of lubricant (Nivea lotion in his case) to the back of you left hand, allows for quick dabs as you are working the putty Add a cylinder of putty along the back and smooth down with a Beale Wax Carving Tool. The idea is to make it smoothed back in with the rest of the model Use knife tool to cut in the spine sections and separate each collum Turn the knife tool upside down to poke in the bottom of the …

Watch This: How to Paint a Weathered Tank

For this week’s Watch This, you may end up hating me because this isn’t a short video. In fact, the OrcPainterNerd put together over an hour of video on how to paint a weathered tank. It’s a fascinating as he walks you through why he uses certain colors, why he sprays random brown spots all over, and some great tips on using oils and powders. In fact, make sure you check out video four around minute 7 where he uses a brush and airbrush to create the mud spatter. Overview of his Process For a cheat sheet of what he did to paint a weather tank, I’ve written down the process below. It’s a long list ( an hour of video remember!), but I tried to capture the highlights for you. Seal and prime the model with gray Randomly spray the model with small dots/messes of dark gray and brown Spray chipping medium over model Spray white paint over model – the base color for the Death Guard Chip top paint away with moist, worn out …

Watch This Painting Bases

Watch This: Painting Bases

Today’s Watch This is from Garfy of Tale of Painters where he shows us how he paints his bases. While a relatively simple and straightforward approach, he ends up with great results. In his video tutorial, he walks us through the steps to paint and then detail the bases of his Deathwatch squad with a nice dessert look. Watch This: Painting Bases Some of the things I liked about his video is that each step was short and sweet. There isn’t anything special in his recipe, and he shows that. What he does do is make conscience choices about what colors to use and how to place the grass. An example of this is that he doesn’t just plop down a section of the Mordheim Turf from the package, but rather uses scissors to chop it into smaller, more realistic bits. The Steps: For those that didn’t watch the full video, or want a quick text steps of how he did it, I’ve put them down below. Finish model except for the base Use Texture ‘brush’ …

Watch This Painting with Washes with Greg

Watch This: Painting With Washes

Today’s Watch This is from Greggle’s on Feed Your Nerd where he shows us how to batch paint Orks with nothing but washes. That’s right, everything except the metal details is painting with applications of wash layered over a shaded base coat. Watch This: Painting with Washes One of the things I like about Greg’s video is that he shows the technique on one Ork, but then cut-tapes ahead to show the whole batch finished. This makes for a nice way to learn the technique, but not watch paint dry. If you haven’t checked out Greg’s fantastic Orks, do so at http://www.feedyournerd.com/greggles-tabletop The Steps: For those that didn’t watch the full video, or want a quick text steps of how he did it, I’ve put them down below. Note, I updated a few of the colors to the modern GW washes. Prime models white (bonus: prime dark gray first then white from above) Wash the whole model with Agrax Earthshade Wash skin with Beil-Tan Green For larger Orks apply second (or third) layer of Beil-Tan Casandora Yellow for the …
