Good Reads 56 with Orks, Maps, Mutants, and Marines. Get Inspired

Another awesome week of hobby posts is upon us. So come check out my selection of hobby posts you should not miss in Good Reads 56. Heros of the Empire These beautiful conversions and the alternative paint scheme is what caught my eye with Bruno’s Dark Angel successors. Particularly the bone-white for his Captain, converted from the Space Hulk set. And the Mutant Wilhelm has made some incredible conversions, but this may now be one of my favorites. Using a real snail shell, Crypt Horror, and Plague Drone, the Abalone Mutant was born. The paint job is also brilliant with the mix of blue, white, and purple. Drawing Fantasy Maps I’m always impressed by the tutorials at Dagger and Brush, not only because of their quality, but also they aren’t your typical topics. Like this one on how to draw fantasy maps! From DnD adventures to story based campaigns, drawing a custom map can really tell the story. Men in Black Jeff has done some incredible conversions, but for this squad of Deathwatch Primaris, he …

Good Reads 45 – Awesome Hobby Posts to Catch

Back with some awesome hobby posts from the last two weeks, I’ve some great articles for you to check out from 30k, 40k, AoS, and Blood Bowl! I even have two tutorials in there for you to learn some new painting tips. Ultramarine Battle Tanks I love tanks, and Lord Halfpenny’s mobile detachment for his 30k Ultramarines caught my eye. Between the nice shade of blue and the weathered tracks, they fit the nice balance between the traditional boys in blue and realistic military vehicles. Drakon Riders When I first looked at Swordmaster’s Drakon Riders, I thought they were simply a dragon kit that I didn’t remember, only to read his post and find out the are converted from Cold Ones and Vargheist wings! Not only a cool conversion but a nice paint job as well. How to Paint Non-metallic Metallics Painting non-metallic metals is an advanced painting concept that can look nice when pulled off. Blazmo has been learning how to do it on his Greyfox Inquisitor. In the process, he decided to create …

How-To: Adding LEDs to 40k Tanks

When I go into my local Games Workshop store, people can’t stop talking about my models. Why? It’s because they light up! And I want to show you how easy adding LEDs to your 40k tanks, vehicles, and terrain can be. Guest post from Andrew Dart, originally posted on his blog, which he is phasing out. Instead, find him on Instagram as @hobbyvices. This post is helpful for me because I’ve been trying to add LED lighting to my Knight Titan and Stompa as I build them. Shine on! My land raider was the first time I’ve ever used LED wiring components in my entire life, and it was ridiculously easy.  Much easier than I anticipated.  I’ve repeated the process on a Rhino transport for my Berserkers to do a step-by-step for anyone curious or scared at the idea of dealing with LEDs. Ordering the Supplies All materials for wiring and lighting came from Evans Design.  I find them to be the best quality, and alarmingly straightforward – they come pre-wired! Make sure you match …

Watch This: How to Paint a Weathered Tank

For this week’s Watch This, you may end up hating me because this isn’t a short video. In fact, the OrcPainterNerd put together over an hour of video on how to paint a weathered tank. It’s a fascinating as he walks you through why he uses certain colors, why he sprays random brown spots all over, and some great tips on using oils and powders. In fact, make sure you check out video four around minute 7 where he uses a brush and airbrush to create the mud spatter. Overview of his Process For a cheat sheet of what he did to paint a weather tank, I’ve written down the process below. It’s a long list ( an hour of video remember!), but I tried to capture the highlights for you. Seal and prime the model with gray Randomly spray the model with small dots/messes of dark gray and brown Spray chipping medium over model Spray white paint over model – the base color for the Death Guard Chip top paint away with moist, worn out …

Good Reads 27 With Domitars, Bases, Renegade Knights and More

Welcome to another week of Good Reads. If you are looking for a bit of inspiration or new tutorials to watch, Good Reads is a collection from recent postings around the web. Check out your fellow hobbyists and leave them a few comments as well! Domitars Rob put together a great pair of a Domitars that are not only painted extremely well, but he did a fantastic job of posing them to create a great sense of motion and story. The gory trooper at his feet also provides a nice contrast to his cool, robotic look. Painting Bases Wilhel is back this week with a great step-by-step on how he paints his bases. They are a great mix of jungle, marble tile, and 40k morbid gothic. And he makes it look so simple too! If you want to see the monster he put on this beautiful base, check out his Tyranid mutant as well. Meeting of Scouts There are two types of scratch builders in my mind: the economist who is trying to hack together an expensive …

From tutorials to fantastic looking models, I try to distil down a few of my favorites that I feel you just can’t miss out on seeing. So check them out and maybe learn a new idea or get inspired for your next project. Creating Rock Bases Scott has been painting up a bunch of characterful models from Super Dungeon Explorer and creating fantastic looking bases for them. In a two-part series, he shows how he built and painted the rocky outcropping above. Though he kept the secret of the flowers out of this post. Hobby Blogging If you are reading this, clearly you are interested in blogs about our hobby. Also interested in how and why to blog about it? Corrm at St. Andrews Wargaming put together an epic post on his thoughts about hobby blogging. Iron Warriors Banebade Front

Iron Warriors Baneblade

Editor’s Note: I painted the Baneblade a few years back but didn’t have great pictures for it, so while I am busy packing and moving, its a great time to finally get him a new post. Now a days every 40k army needs a super heavy to bring to the table. An Ork Stompa, a Knight Titan, or in this case, an Iron Warriors Baneblade super heavy tank. I built this tank nearly 4 years ago shortly after it came out, at the time it was the largest, and most amazing kit Games Workshop produced and part of the launch of Apocalypse. At the time I didn’t have any loyalist army so I clearly needed to build an Iron Warriors Baneblade for the 14th Grand Company. In keeping with my other Iron Warrior tanks, the Chaos icons are kept to a minimum and the tank is mostly the typical iron and gold trim. I did spend a good deal of time scraping away the Imperial Iconography that decorates the standard build, but a good chisel blade …

Welcome back to another week of Good Reads. I’ve got a doozy for you this week with great posts on tanks, titans, beasts and monsters! For the new here, the Good Reads posts are where I gather some of my favorite post from the week and share them with my readers. So this is my attempt to gather a few that caught my eye and I wanted to share with all of you, so enjoy and click on through to check out their posts! I love tanks, and when someone goes so far as magnetizing them for options, I am always impressed – it has always been way too much work for me. Well the GunGrave not only painted an amazing Predator for his Heresy Death Guard, but magnetized three different turrets to go along with it. The Apologist over on Death of …

Iron Warriors Land Raider

Iron Warriors Land Raider

For today’s showcase, I present my Iron Warriors Land Raider. A classic for any powered armored army, the Land Raider is beast of a tank considering its age in comparison to many of the other amazing Games Workshop kits. I finished this model over six years ago now but wanted to post updated pictures since I have improved my photography skills over the years. Considering the number of engagements this guy has gone through, he is in remarkable shape with only a couple of the spikey bits breaking off. Its also fun to look back on some of our older models and see where we have improved, but also where we may have lost some things. For example, the weathering on the tracks is a mess compared to some of my recent models, but the hazard stripes on the lascannons are in a place I would be timid about placing now. This was also the time that I actually painted in the inside of the tanks – for what ever reason. To achieve this I …

Vostroyan Hydra by the GunGrave on A Guardsmen's Guide

Good Reads 2015W23 – Tanks

Welcome to another week of Good Reads, this week I have put together a great collection of tanks from the last few weeks – and I love tanks. So check out the posts below and leave your fellow bloggers some comments!   Rednekkboss is a fan of the gribbly bits and it shows in this fantastic Nurgle Vindicator. You can check out his previous posts to watch this nasty, horrible, awesomely painted beast come together from the amazing rust effects to that creepy green eye. So the new Hydra Kit from Games Workshop is awesome, but the GunGrave took it one step further and modified it to be a Vostroyan Hydra complete with custom gunner and loader. Hopefully someday GW will give these other IG units some love again to make it easier to theme our armies. I love the new Stalkertank and I have a fondness for traitor guard, so I love bigbossredskullz’ take on it. Not only is the weathering well done, but the little chaos bits are spot on. Greggles has been doing some great …

Leman Russ Demolisher Squadron Showcase

Traitor Guard Leman Russ Demolisher Squad

Who doesn’t like a tank with a big gun? And what is better than one tank with a big gun? A whole squadron of Leman Russ Demolisher tanks with big guns! One of the reasons I wanted to build up an Imperial Guard (Astra Militarium?) army was because I have always been a bit of a tread-head, so adding some hard hitting Demolishers was a no brainer. I built all three of these tanks from the older Leman Russ kit with only one being the old, out of production, metal Demolisher cannon. The other two were built from other bits and pressed to service. To keep them uniform, all three have track guards which help signify their higher armor value and my army badge on the front. The metal Leman Russ Demolisher was my brothers from his old Catachan army from somewhere in middle school. The traitors seized it and stripped it of its honor. Leman Russ Demolisher It originally had the sponsons, but they had broken off over the years. So to hide the damage, …

Good Reads 2 with awesome hobby blogs to read

Good Reads #2 – Hobby Blogs You May Have Missed

Welcome back to another week of Good Reads. I have more hobby blogs posts from our niche in the world that stuck out to me, and I wanted to share. Check them out and support your fellow hobbyist and celebrate their accomplishments. Iron Snakes M4cro has painted up a full squad of Iron Snakes he has called Squad Lakodeme. Some fantastically painted shield designs and a cool story he is telling with these Marines. I’m a big fan of the Spartan look on Marines and especially Marines with shields, and these guys fit both bills. Custom Built Razor Back Turret Typically a Razorback doesn’t get anyone excited, but D  Powers scratch built his turret with some crazy, ornate detail and an exposed Techmarine who is just looking like a boss. Also, check out his armies back story, I love when people expand upon little tidbits or create whole new stories from the lore. Building a Bridge How many remember your first hobby projects? How about your first foray into blog posting? Stephanie Young has not only jumped into …
