Ladies and Gentleman, October has pretty much come to an end. This week our participants were challenged to finish their models, completing their Dreadtober pledge. While there is still one week left of the challenge where we will work on photography, today we put our brushes down and declared victory! Gothmog This Red Hunter’s Mortis Dread was achieved simply with successively brighter silver undercoats and then washes of blood letter glaze for the red and seraphim sepia for the gold, with some Nuln oil in all the recesses and exposed silver parts. This method can achieve these results in a single night and is a great way to get a Tabletop/tournament quality army ready to go. Dreadtober Showcase: The Base

All your base belongs to Dreadtober! This week our participants were challenged to build and paint a base for their dreadnought-sized model. Below is the Base Showcase, highlighting each of their progress and how they are doing. Basecoat Painting Showcase Note: Some are copied from last week as they weren’t able to make progress (life ya know!) or have already finished. But I still want to highlight the awesome work everyone is doing. Albie So the base for my dreadnought is designed after the red rocky terrain of Mars. I started with a blank base and a piece of 1/4″ thick cork. This way the dreadnought will stand over most other models. I broke away pieces until I liked the shape fitting on the base and so the dreadnought could stand nicely on it. Then I painted the whole base brown to start. Then layered on the cracked earth technical paint Martian Ironearth. After letting that dry I touched up any spots I missed with Tuskgor Fur, then I drenched the base in Argax Earthshade. …

Dreadtober: The Participants

The Dreadtober build and paint event is officially started! Last week, I posted a pre-event challenge to have the participants plan what they will accomplish for the month. The idea was to organize and prepare for the month. I challenged each of them to make goals for not only the finished model but what steps they would need to accomplish along the way. As the challenges progress, the Saturday Showcase will highlight their progress. For this first week, it’s more of a meet the participants and have them share what their plan’s are. Next up from the Deathstorm box is the three Tyranid Warriors. This is the second Tyranid Warriors brood that I’ve painted, with the first being armed with scything talons and death spitters, I decided to give this squad a venom cannon and devourers for shooting, and bone swords and lash whips for close range. I really like the new Tyranid Warriors kit with all the great weapon options, it was actually a bit difficult to decide on what to go with. I liked the idea of the bone swords for marine killingness and the lash whips give an interesting look as well. The devourers were just because they looked cool and were different from the death spitters in the other squad. I based these just like the Carnifex, using bark to add some rock formations and leaving bare spots on the base for water areas. I think it adds a nice green organic contrast to the alien blue and red. It also helped that the bases used in the Deathstorm box were a bit bigger than the typical …

I admit it, I’m a tread head and a star wars geek, so when I was building up my Traitor Guard, not only did I fill it with a bunch of tanks, but had to add at least a couple of Sentinels. So here is my Traitor Guard Armored Sentinel squad armed with plasma cannons. I built up the bases using extra bits and sprue then filled in the bumps with plaster with a final layer of gravel on top. Conversions were fairly simple. The eagles on the front were cut off, and a chaos star was bent around the front of one and two Chaos Vehicle plates were added to the front of the other. I love painting monstrous creatures almost as much as I love painting tanks, there is just so much character, and presence in the larger models. This Tyranid Carnifex is from the Shield of Baal box – the first of the big bugs and my second Carnifex. I painted him to be part of my brother-in-law’s Hive Fleet Behemoth so used deep reds for the skin and black-to-blue for the carapace. Since I armed the other Tyranid Carnifex with a venom cannon and scything talons, I gave this guy the barbed strangler and tank crushing claws – in part because they look bad ass. I decided to take the base up a notch using some of the techniques I practiced on my Ork Warboss. Using cork, I added some height. But also left bare patches in the sand to allow for water puddles. This was also the first model I’ve bought with the new oval bases and I love it. It gives a larger canvas for this guy to walk on without sticking out to the sides too much. If …

All armies need a powerful leader, and the galactic swarm of the Tyranids is no exception. So to lead my brother-in-law’s Hive Fleet Behemoth army growing on my shelf is a Tyranid Hive Tyrant – in this case, the old metal beast. Much like my other Tyranids of Behemoth, the blue carapace goes nearly white rather the GW teal and the weapons are a black to white look. This shows through on the darker background here that I made with some black/gray cloth. I tried using the basic white background, but the tips of the weapons got lost. The barbed strangler is a plastic bit from the Carnifex box to give some long range punch to the guy. It is one of the things I have always liked about GW products is that they put in that effort to make the kits inter-operable to give both the flexibility to bit swap but also keeps a uniform look between generations. With all those Ork Walkers mucking about, the Boyz needed some upgrades of their own to get them to the fray. Fortunately, I had two trucks (or Trukks) sitting in the closet of doom. While being a bit fiddly to assemble (I knocked the side panels off constantly!), I left the wheels, crew, and the wrecking ball separate to allow simpler painting. Following in the junkyard look of my walkers, I painted the trucks to look like they had just been cobbled together and covered in just enough blue paint to get them to the fighting. I mix of the dark Gothic rust mixed with the Ork comically bright colors. Among the blue panels, you can see segments of other Ork clans like the yellow Flash Gitz, red Speed Freaks, and checkered Goffs. Because there are so many great tidbits all over the truck, I felt the need to highlight them in different colors, patterns, and chipping. Take for instance the side panels here; you’ve got little dags bolted on the top, arrows and lighting …
