Book Review: Iron Warrior by Graham McNeill

Being a bit of a fan of the Iron Warriors I was super excited when I heard about the new novella from Black Library titled “Iron Warrior“. This is another Graham McNeill store featuring Honsou and the Ultramarines continuing after the end of “Dead Sky, Black Sun.” Iron Warriors Book Review: Short Story and Disappointing Pictures The biggest selling point that got me to shell out the extra for this little book was the description that the book is “filled with many pieces of artwork, both illustrations and full-color portraits” which made me visualize an Index Astartes type of production. This ended up being my biggest disappointment of the book, the quality of the illustrations were more of the ’80 GW style of cartoony creations, but with hazard stripes to make them authentic Iron Warriors. Also, half the illustrations were of Ultramarines or imperial warriors, which is great to fill in the story and space but was disappointing when I was looking forward to a book featuring, I don’t know, maybe the Iron Warriors? Fabius Bile

Another classic model that I’ve had since third edition, Fabius Bile used to be a potentially amazing (or horrible) character – all his stats were D6 modified! One of my goals for this Golden Throne challenge (other than actually paint all the force org slots) is to try some different painting techniques.  For my terminators and obliterators I focused on the faces and tusks. For Fabius I wanted to try white power armor and even more practice on his face and fleshy robe. I know he is painted with a dark purple armor in the codex but I figured that since Fabius used to be the chaplain of the Emperor’s Children the traditional white armor would be fitting as well. Other than the armor and darker robe I tried to follow how the original GW Fabius looks. Obliterators

I finished my Obliterators as well, which fills my heavy support slots for the Golden Throne painting challenge. Some of you old time players may recognize these classic sculpts by Dave Andrews, for those who didn’t play 3rd edition CSM behold the glory of old school Chaos: That’s right, these guys are so awesome they have guns out of their eyes, mouth and chest! They are smaller than the current models (they used to be on the smaller bases) but how could I pass up repainting these guys and putting them on the battlefield? One thing I did do with both of these and my terminators I just finished is a slightly different base colors. I had been doing grays for gravel for city besieging but it seemed to make the whole model more dull and blur with the silver. Instead I tried a more organic look with browner gravel and grass. I used graveyard earth for the base and highlighted with bleached bone added to it.  The grass is a mixture of GW’s scorched …

More IW Terminators Finished – Golden Throne Painting and ToEMP Final

Well I was happy to continue plodding along my with my Traitor Guard army (I have a handful of guys to add and half a dozen tanks to paint) but when I happened to stop by my local GW I was told about the Golden Throne painting challenge. Basically you get 6 weeks to fully paint a full force org chart. Although I do have plenty of guard to paint the was no way I could fill up a force org without buying a great deal of new guys. Instead I pulled out my old, metal Iron Warriors (the ones I painted many years back). I had already dunked a handful of them and after adding in the ones I was planning on adding to the green tank I am short only one bike of a full chart! It wouldn’t be a very competitive list (not sure the survivability of 3 man terminators and 5 man troop squads), but it fits the bill. The first selection filled, my Elites with three 3 man squads. Warsmith Built and Primed

I’ve had this model since Christmas and have been trying to figure out how to turn the WFB Khorne Lord on Juggernaut into a mighty Warsmith of the Iron Warriors. The model as sculpted is a terrific looking model but the challenge was to make it look like it could fit into the 41st millennium. In the end I replaced the arms with CSM arms, added a CSM head and backpack and re-sculpted the cloak to fit the backpack. The power weapon is a combination of a CSM banner pole and a giant axe from the WFB Chaos Knights. The pictures are a bit hard to make out the detail due to the black primer but I am excited to start painting. Work on this will be interleaved with painting my hoard of Traitor Guard but I will continue to post pictures of the progress.

Troop Squad Three Done (with pictures!)

Finished up another troop squad of Chaos Space Marines for my Iron Warriors. This squad is wielding two melta-guns and led by a crazy, plasma gun and power fist loaded champion. Although this makes the champion a bit on the expensive side, he is invaluable when it comes to taking out armored dudes, armored tanks, or monstered fools. Unlike my other troop squad, these guys are fully finished. The icon needs no extra painting and the XIVs are all done. ~created this post a few weeks back but forgot to publish it!

Defiler Pictures

Finally, here are the pictures of my Iron Warrior Defiler. I entered this two weeks ago in a painting competition at my local GW store. This didn’t place, but I had a great time painting it (and the competition gave me a good excuse to finish it!). I didn’t do much conversion to the model, but I did build up a base for it from an old CD. Now that this model is finally built and painted I need to get him into a game and blow away all those silly loyalists! The guns are magnetized so if I later decide to go dual close combat arms or replace the flamer with a havoc, it will be a snap I also tried to magnetize the torso to the legs but it was too heavy for my little magnets so I had to pin it. The top still comes off for storage and transportation, but it can’t rotate during a game. The base is an old CD that I glued a layer of pink Styrofoam onto. …

Traitor Guard Basilisk Squadron – The Moirae

What would Iron Warrior army be complete without some good artillery pieces to pummel the foe? Presented here is my traitor guard basilisk squadron, The Moirae. These tanks were from a prize giveaway at the local Games Workshop Store during the Apocalypse Reloaded release. They have made a great addition to the 14th Grand Company and inspired me to build up a full traitor guard army. Atropos won a mini golden demon award at the local battle bunker, and the full squad won a painting competition at the local store. They have also served the War Smith well in two  Apocalypse games raining death upon the foes. I painted them in my Iron Warriors color scheme and made adjustments to the Imperial iconography throughout the tanks. Taking the X-Acto to the tank, I removed the Aquilas and added a few touches of Chaos instead. Clotho is the designated command tank as fitting with the evil commissar enforcing his rule. I had fun building up the gunner crew out of a mix of Cadians, Catachans, and heavy …

This is Captian Nestryx, commander of the assult forces of the 14th Grand Company. He marches to war in his Terminator Armour and dual lightning claws. As for conversion work on this model I used the Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour kit and used the two lightning claws in the box. I didn’t like the position of the claws so I cut each hand at the wrist, turned is slightly and re-glued. To make this work I had to redo the power cables running to each hand. I made the new cables out of 5 pieces of plastic rod and wrapped with a thin strip of green stuff. I also used a head from the Iron Warriors upgrade bitz set. This required some sanding of the head and armour opening to allow it to fit, but it has a great result. The base is one of the ones included in GW’s basing kit. It is the same size as the normal base for Terminators so I just used it instead.

Land Raider Pictures

The Land Raider was a blast to put together and paint, it has so many  great details inside and out. The lascannon sponsons are magnetized to the hull so I could take them off. I painted the inside of the vehicle before gluing the top section on: The side access doors were also magnetized to show off the inside. There was very little modifications to the actual model other than adding some Chaos spiky bits and replacing the lascannon tips with the dragon heads.

This dreadnought was originally from the Assault on Black Reach box set from GW but with some modifications. The most obvious is the head. I cut out the front plate and modified one of the masks from the Defilier kit. The wires hanging below are an assortment of guitar strings and small gauge wire. The another modification made is the added trim and stars. This was made with thin plasti-card strips cut to length and glued down.
