Good Reads 57 – Tutorials, Conversions, Oddness, and More

Looking for some awesome hobby reads to check out? Good Reads 57 is finally here with some of my favorite posts from the last few weeks. There are so many excellent hobby bloggers out there sharing fantastic content, and this is a celebration of some of that work. I owe big thanks to Scott (@brushwizard) for guilting me into finally getting this post written. Apparently, I have built up an expectation among some of you to get this out now and then! So without further ado, here are your Good Reads: A New Plague The creative genius Da RedNekkz does a great job of converting and painting disgusting Nurgle, things. This converted Plague Caster is a perfect example of that. It’s fun to see how artists modify pieces to fit their vision. A Son to Be Proud Of Modian is well known for finishing whole armies in a week before selling them off to start the next. His current focus is this beautiful Sons of Horus, complete with a great looking Contemptor. Build a Zone …

Good Reads 51

Good Reads 51 a HUGE collection of hobby posts to enjoy

Welcome to Good Reads 51 where I share some awesome hobby posts from the last two weeks. With some painting tutorials, amazing miniatures, and awesome hobbyists, there is lots to check out. Alternative Magnus the Red The plastic Magnus the Red is already an incredible miniature, so it takes some skill and creativity to convert it. Rebecca took up that challenge with this creepy alternative for their INQ28 campaign. Painting a Blue Orc Popping out of his shell to give us another incredible painting tutorial, Darren Latham wrote how he painted this blue Orruk Megaboss face. While not everyone will want their orcs to be slightly blue, the details around the ears, eyes, and mouth are useful for any orc/ork/orruk player. Master of Change As this is the third Thousand Sons army that Moridan7th has painted, and then sold  :-/, I think it is fair to say he knows a thing or two about the army. He is also a painted machine, and by the time of this post, he has already finished a few other …

Good Reads 48 of Broken Paintbrush

Good Reads 48

Skip scrolling through the blog feed for a minute and check out this week’s list of Good Reads. I’ve collect some of the posts that have caught my eye over the last two weeks and gather them here for you to check out, catch up on if you fell behind, or maybe find someone new to follow. With that, here is Good Reads 48. Seeking Guidance Alex has joined in with The Chapel project to create a unique mix of backwoods clans in the 40k world.  This is his second Ostium Guild for the event and not only did he make these two incredible miniatures, but a great short story to go with them as well. Necron Destroyers Siph has just completed his third unit of Necron Destroyers with a nice looking half-field of blue. Combined with his Destroyer Lord he now has a Destroyer Cult formation to wipe out his enemies. AoS28 and Warhammer Quest AoS28 is picking up momentum and Crimson Oracle has combined it with his interest in expanding Warhammer Quest with …

Work in Progress Stompa and Inq28

Stompa Progress and Squaduary

Making good progress on the Stompa (still to be named) as I am focusing on his central body section before moving on the extra bits. I also have an update on the INQ28 squad and announcing my pledge for Squaduary. I’ve been working on adding more work in progress posts, in part because I know many of you like them, but it also relieves some pressure to create big, full posts every week. Stompa Progress I’ve been working on the Stompa during couch time and following the same steps as the Morkanaut. But the sheer size of this beast is a bit overwhelming. Not only is it about twice the height of the Morkanaut, but the surface area due to his bulk is massive. So I started by focusing on just the main body piece. While it’s the largest, once I get it done I can crank out all accessory pieces and glue them on as I go. At this point I have all the rusty metal done and the colored panels highlighted. I need …

Good Reads 44 by Borken Paintbrush

Good Reads 44

Welcome back to another week with Good Reads 44, a collection of hobby articles from around the web that you don’t want to miss. With tutorials, inspiration, and some amazing models, these are well worth checking out. Acastus Knight So the Acastus Knight is an incredible kit from Forge World and Jake of Redscorps did a fantastic job of painting his. Between the well done blue and white scheme and just enough weathering, it’s an excellent centerpiece. Making Robes from Tin While not for the faint of heart (and thin-skinned), D Powers put together a tutorial on how to use thin sheets of tin to create custom robes. The end effect is incredible as it creates a much thinner robe than using green stuff. Age of Munda The freedom that INQ28 allows is an interesting concept that I have started playing with, but the rules are scattered and a bit complicated for basic games. So  I love what BigBossRedSkullz did by combining the game mechanics of Age of Sigmar with Necromunda. Allows for great narrative while minimizing …

Good Reads Week 28

Welcome to another week of Good Reads where I showcase a handful of great blog posts from the last few weeks by other amazing bloggers. Check out the posts, hit up their blogs, and hopefully I can share something you may have missed. With a newborn at home, this last week has been a bit of a blur so sorry if I haven’t been commenting as normal. I did manage to pull together this week’s Good Reads for your enjoyment. So if you aren’t busy trying to catch all the Pokemon, check out some of these great post. Inquisitor Lazaros As I get further into the world of Inq28 the more amazing conversions I find. J.E. from the Convertorum is building up a Black Ship crew with the Captain-Inquisitor above as the leader. It’s all the little details like the robotic leg and arm and the questionably chaos chest plate that make this guy so cool looking. Surviving a Death World Games Workshop is coming out in a big way on social media and non-standard marketing such as The …

INQ28 Techno-Barbarian Ma’tu

So diving back into the world of 40k today, I have finished up my first Inquisitor 28 model. This INQ28 Techno-Barbarian was born out of a soup of inspirations (and need to step away from Mansions of Madness a bit!). The biggest prompt to try this guy was Adam of The Golden D6 got me hooked up to do a paint review of WarColors line of paints. They were super generous and sent me a pile of goodies but specifically, seven different turquoise paints to highlight one of their unique selling points (group colors into shades to highlights). I won’t dive into the paints here as I’m saving it for the review. So armed with seven types of turquoise and three shades of brass, my primary color selection was chosen for me. The problem? I had nothing painted turquoise! But I did have the free Stormcast that came with the White Dwarf a few months back and a pile of bits. With his plate armor and stoic pose, I figured a heavy would suit him best. So …

Good Reads 2015 Week 36 – Tanks, Titan, Beasts, and Monsters

Welcome back to another week of Good Reads. I’ve got a doozy for you this week with great posts on tanks, titans, beasts and monsters! For the new here, the Good Reads posts are where I gather some of my favorite post from the week and share them with my readers. So this is my attempt to gather a few that caught my eye and I wanted to share with all of you, so enjoy and click on through to check out their posts! I love tanks, and when someone goes so far as magnetizing them for options, I am always impressed – it has always been way too much work for me. Well the GunGrave not only painted an amazing Predator for his Heresy Death Guard, but magnetized three different turrets to go along with it. The Apologist over on Death of …

Good Reads Week 35 2015

Welcome back to another week of Good Reads on the Broken Paintbrush, where I’ve gathered some great articles and inspirations from my blog feed. I hope you enjoy and check out each of the blogger’s works. First up is The Hunter by Jeff Vader over at the Convertorum. Its an amazing work of his imagination for an alien warrior for his Inq28 games. He even goes into naming the Skadii and giving story to their alien society. NafNaf over at Objective Secured keeps knocking his Dark Eldar Carnival out of the park, and this time with his completed Beast Pack. With a mix of lions, monkeys, and parrots, it makes for a great riot of color and movement. Greggles from Feed the Nerd is passionately attempting to finish his Ork hoard for Nova Open. Between using crackle paste for the display boards, to painting 16+ vehicles yellow, and more troops to go, he has been a machine at cranking them out. Alex over at Lead Ballony took the free AoS model and turned it into a clock-work automa …

Good Reads 2 with awesome hobby blogs to read

Good Reads #2 – Hobby Blogs You May Have Missed

Welcome back to another week of Good Reads. I have more hobby blogs posts from our niche in the world that stuck out to me, and I wanted to share. Check them out and support your fellow hobbyist and celebrate their accomplishments. Iron Snakes M4cro has painted up a full squad of Iron Snakes he has called Squad Lakodeme. Some fantastically painted shield designs and a cool story he is telling with these Marines. I’m a big fan of the Spartan look on Marines and especially Marines with shields, and these guys fit both bills. Custom Built Razor Back Turret Typically a Razorback doesn’t get anyone excited, but D  Powers scratch built his turret with some crazy, ornate detail and an exposed Techmarine who is just looking like a boss. Also, check out his armies back story, I love when people expand upon little tidbits or create whole new stories from the lore. Building a Bridge How many remember your first hobby projects? How about your first foray into blog posting? Stephanie Young has not only jumped into …
