Harvey Walters from Mansions of Madness

Painting Harvey Walters of Mansions of Madness

What is an old man doing running around a creepy old mansion? Don’t underestimate the Prof! This week brings a tutorial on painting Harvey Walters, an investigator in the Mansions of Madness game. Harvey’s use in the game is to solve puzzles and has a relatively high sanity – ideal for when the monsters start to show up. He offsets his frailty with a magic staff that allows him to reduce any damage down to one, yup even a Shaggoth can’t swallow the old man whole. Painting wise, I wanted to give Professor Walters a classic suite, but with a hit of color. A white shirt, royal purple vest, and a black jacket it is. And to set off the vest, a bright yellow hanky. Color List As with the rest of the set, I’ve stuck to mostly the Vallejo range as I like their dropper bottles. All the Model Colors used are from the Painting Skin Set. Skintones: Model Color Light Brown Model Color Medium Fleshtone Model Color Basic Skintone Model Color Light Flesh …

Painting Guide Kate Winthrop

Painting Kate Winthrop – Mansions of Madness Investigator

I’m back with another Mansions of Madness painting tutorial, this week with Kate Winthrop. Kate is a supporting investigator, the scientist who makes uncovering clues and solving puzzles much faster for the investigator team. As I’ve been exploring different skin tone options as well as wanting a diversified investigator team, I decided to paint Kate with a dark skin tone. I also explore some of the shaded basecoat technique where you paint a few layers of highlights before washing it back down. Step 1 – Base Coats So the model was prepped by removing the grotesque number of mold lines and attempted to fill in a few seems. She was then primed with white primer spray and let dry. The main color sections were blocked out. This allows me to get a sense of how she will look in the end and rebalance colors if needed. The skin started with the dark Mahagony brown, the dress a nice deep purple, and of course the lab coat with an off-white base. Colors Skin: Model Color Mahagony Brown …

Good Reads Week 24

Welcome to another week of Good Reads where I showcase a handful of great blog posts from the last few weeks by other amazing bloggers. Check out the posts, hit up their blogs, and hopefully I can share something you may have missed. Making Mud James Wappel is best known for his ‘shaded basecoat’ technique and painting amazing models super fast. He does some great tutorials around the other aspects of the hobby including this great look at how he made very convincing mud bases for his Bolt Action tanks. Another Mansions of Madness Painter I’m still slogging through my miniatures from the Mansions of Madness game and it’s been great to watch Scott as he does a set as well. I’ve definitely stolen some ideas for the pieces I haven’t yet finished. Removing the Shine from Decals Decals are hard enough to set in place to where you need them to, let alone make them look like they fit into the rest of the model.  Judging Jester put together his thoughts on Army Painter’s Anti-shine medium …

Orruk Megaboss Unboxing

I am probably not alone in wanting the new Orruks when the leaks spread a month back. I mean, they are huge, they look mean as nails, and (to me at least) are the coolest kits released for Age of Sigmar. With that said, I pre-ordered only the Orruk Megaboss (for now!) with the goal of turning him into my 40k Ork Warboss. But as I’m starting to play with video posts, I figured an unboxing video was needed for this beast of a kit. I took the advice from my first video and made this one shorter and improved the audio. The Orruk Megaboss is a Beast! So the big thing to note on this guy is that he is huge! He fills in a 60mm base and wears it well. Height wise, he is a head taller than the Assault on Black Reach Warboss and easily twice as thick. As I’ll mention in the assembly section, he’s able to achieve this bulk by being hollow. This allows the model to bulk out without being a …

Painting tutorial for Ashcan Pete

Painting Ashcan Pete – Tutorial and Painting Guide

A second investigator joins the team of painted models, this week with Ashcan Pete. As with the other models of the Mansions of Madness game that I am painting, I have put together a painting guide for him and his faithful dog. Preparation As Ashcan Pete is traveler and vagabond, I painted his clothes to look more worn and threadbare with dry brushing gray over the base colors. It also seemed fitting to give him a rough beard. For prep, the mold lines were shaved down – well at least most of them. There are still a number of noticeable ones on both Pete and his dog, but for a board game piece I was content with the ones I did manage to remove. A white spray primer was used to provide the base coat for all the paints. The primer allows the acrylic paints to adhere to something much better than on the initial plastic. I don’t use anything fancy, just white spray primer I pick up at Home Depot. Painting Order So I broke down …

How to Paint Jenny Barnes

Jenny Barnes – Painting Tutorial

Jenny Barnes is one of the heroine investigators from Mansions of Madness board game. A pistol-toting flapper that hunts cultists and zombies in high heels and a tight dress. Rather than have her run around as gray plastic, I painted Jenny in her iconic blue outfit and gave her a fairly pale skin. Below I put together a tutorial on how to paint her. Don’t have time to read it all or want a nice, printable version? I also put together a PDF version, just jump to the bottom and fill in your email. From Beginner to Happy, Painting Jenny Barnes Preparation The models from Fantasy Flight Games are in relatively good condition for painting except for some mold lines (see the brim of her hat below). I used a hobby knife to scrape most of the lines off but as you can see I missed a few. Step 1: Primer After priming with White Primer, she was ready to paint. The remaining mold lines (like her hat) were scrapped off as I painted and noticed them. …

Dark Elf Master

Dark Elf Masters

May I now introduce you to my Dark Elf army. When I first got back into the hobby a few years back the Dark Elves were the army I started back up with since they had just been re-released. I choose to post the pictures of my Masters/Dreadlords first because it shows the improvement in my painting most distinctly. The new dreadlord model was one of the last I painted before moving back over to 40k where as the old dreadlord model was one of the first I painted when getting back into the army. After taking the pictures I realized the base was never finished, he is now moved to the painting desk to remedy this. The weapon arm was swapped with the sword from the Cold One Knights set as I didn’t like the pose of the model with the hook weapon, I’m saving that for something else. I would often army this character with the Heart Seeker sword which is why I attempted to paint the sword with the red tone, not the …

Skink Chief

Skink Heroes

Skink heroes seem to be often looked in favor or the mightier Suarus Scar-Vets or used only as Slann sight-glasses. Used correct Skink Chiefs can be perfect wizard hunters, war-machine destroyers or  a great boost for hunting Skinks. With their movement of 6 they can get where they are needed quickly and with 3 attacks at I6 and S4 they will often strike the first blows against their intended target. Add in the Bane head to double wounds on a specific character and the Burning Blade to punch through armor and even the little skink can take much larger foes down. In 7th edition, Skink Priests were often used as an extension of the Slann’s eyes and perhaps dropping a thunderbolt here and there. The can only pick from Lore of the Heavens which had some great spells but also some not-so-great spells. With the revamp of spells and magic system, the Skink priest has the potential of laying some smack down with chain lightning or the comet or really messing with the enemies plans by making a unit re-roll all their 6’s. Those of …

Lizardmen Scar-Veteran

Lizardmen Scar-Veteran

Next up in my Lizardmen showcase is the Scar-Veteran. While not the most powerful hero in the game, he is a solid character at only 85 points base. With S/T of 5 most troops won’t wound him on less than a 5 while he’ll wound on 2’s. My standard upgrades include the Sword of the Hornet, Enchanted shield and light armor. This gives him a 2+ save and always strikes first. Tactics are pretty straight forward: place him in a unit of Saurus and charge the toughest unit the enemy has. Between his 4 attacks and the 13 S4 attacks of the unit, entire ranks of enemy are knocked down and eaten. The scenic base was more of a necessity as this model is very front heavy and would often fall forward when I moved the unit or placed on any sort of downward slope. I built up the rock mound with flash from the metal kits to create a bit more weight to the base then covered it with green stuff and contoured it to create a jutting …
