It is incredible to see what hobbyists come up with or the new projects they are painting. Good Reads is my attempt to showcase some of the favorite ones I found. I hope they inspire you with your projects and teach you a new trick or two. DIY Terrian is Still Cool Sometimes you need more line of sight blocking scenery pieces, especially with all those big guns out there. To solve this, Jack built up a couple of pieces from leftover cans and a few spare bits. Then with his usual impressive painting skills, he turned them into great looking pieces. Coils of the Hydra I liked how Gungrave’s Alpha Legion Dreadnought turned out. Between the charging pose and the fantastic metallic blue, it makes for a very nice looking Contemptor. The details pop with his paint job as well, showing off Forge World’s excellent sculpting. Dreadtober 2016 is completed! I want to thank everyone who participated and those who cheered everyone on. It’s been a great adventure and some AWESOME models have been completed. I’ve been honored to have had the opportunity to host it this year and it’s been incredible to see what everyone has done. So many of your tried new things or pushed yourself to improve something in your hobby. So even overcame school, work, and illnesses to get things done. So congrats to everybody. Gothmog – COMPLETED! This Red Hunter’s Mortis Dread was achieved simply with successively brighter silver undercoats and then washes of blood letter glaze for the red and seraphim sepia for the gold, with some Nuln oil in all the recesses and exposed silver parts. In today’s tutorial I will show you how to paint a Mentor Legion Dreadnought with plenty of tips and tricks that you can apply to your own models. This is part two of this six-part series for Dreadtober 2016. Last week I showed you my processes for building a custom model through kit bashing. In this post we do all the main colors, leaving the final details for another tutorial. The Mentors are a great chapter to teach a bunch of different colors as they have white (gloriously hard white!), dark green and red, and I even throw in some yellow to mark them as the second company. Sometimes you are going for a unique look, other times you want to add new dynamism to a model. Either way, learning how to build a custom model through kitbashing is an excellent way to make something truly yours. For my examples, I use a Space Marine Dreadnought. They are boxy, unwieldy beasts of a model that are cool, but static looking. I want to fix that problem and show you how I took a Blood Angels Furioso Dreadnought and turned it into a charging Ironclad for my Mentor Legion. Making a Plan As with any project, it’s important to have at least a rough idea of where you are going. It can change, reform, and flow as your build the model and get further inspiration. For this dreadnought, I had a Furioso model sitting in my bits box from the Baal campaign box set (really got it for the Tyranid models). I try to gather some of my favorites here to share with all of my readers. Necron Triarch Necrons have always been one of those armies that I have wanted to do (killer robots are irresistible after all!). I also love blue, so when I saw Grenn’s Necron Triarch Praetorian, I had to share him here. It’s a fantastic metallic blue and green that adds interest to the metal warrior. Red Hunters I hadn’t heard of the Red Hunters until Gothmog’s post on them, but I really like how he used the Death Watch set to build them. It’s a great use of all those inquisitor bits for this specialty chapter and yet not painting more black and silver. With all this awesome Dreadtober action going on I couldn’t help but get caught up in the spirit. With all my paints and models packed away I decided to get involved another way, by writing a short story of newly fallen brother being interred into a Dreadnought. I based the dreadnought short story off of my own Mentor Legion Dreadnought and Command Squad and have been inspired by many of the other hobbyists who write bios for their Inq28 characters. As this is my first ever public short story I really hope for some feedback and if you like it, I have a few more story ideas floating through my head. The thick, acrid smoke clung to the walls like bloated slugs. Brother Tons re-adjusted his optical augurs to compensate, the lenses straining to focus on the intricate work. The flickering candles were drowned out by the surgical light but still managed to create an irritating motion in the peripheral. As the next binaric chant began, his gloved hands paused briefly before the autosenses re-calibrated to block out the frequencies. Reflexes honed …

Adding some beef to my ork hoard is a nice, choppy, Deffdread with lots of buzzing, hacking, and drilling. I love the comical look of all those arms full of wacky weapons and hacked on plates. I’m keeping with the theme of the Death Skulls being scrapers that slap blue on everything and hammer it together. Throughout the model I have Evil Sunz red, and Goff black and whites. Painting Rusty Metal The rest of the model is a nice rusty metal which was done in a number of layers: Black primer with a quick white over spray Brown spray Dry brush of Lead Belcher Orange with rust pigment stippled Dry brush with silver The crazy, cobbled together look of the Deffdread made it so much fun to paint and highlight specific panels with the blues and reds. The base is another Secret Weapon Miniature from their Junk Yard line. They have a fantastic range of bases, and I have decided to move towards pre-made bases for the simplicity and time. So to break up the aliens a bit, I got a bit excited that the Helbrute kit finally came out for Chaos. I had been holding on to the Dark Vengeance model – which I think is a fantastic model (especially for a starter kit!) but I was waiting for a multi-part kit to customize it. For me the stubby Multi-Melta looked a bit off, so that’s what I fixed! To contrast the silver and yellows of my Iron Warriors, I figured purple would do just nicely so I went with purple-blue skin and red-purple red accents. The skin is worked up from Xereus Purple to Calgar blue (with some Lothern blue on the tubing). I used washes of Khorne Red, Leviathan Purple, and Earthshade to add the bruising and shadows. The red was built up over a few shades of red and purple wash used on the daemon face and tentacles. Hard coat was later added to the claws to make them blood-glossy. From the top you can see the nice contrast between purple flesh, …

This dreadnought was originally from the Assault on Black Reach box set from GW but with some modifications. The most obvious is the head. I cut out the front plate and modified one of the masks from the Defilier kit. The wires hanging below are an assortment of guitar strings and small gauge wire. The another modification made is the added trim and stars. This was made with thin plasti-card strips cut to length and glued down.
