I started painting the Blood Bowl Troll as a way to show different painting techniques but found it was going to work better as a general tutorial instead. Check out the tutorial below for tips on how to paint the Troll as well as some general tips on painting with washes and blending. Orc and Goblin teams can take the Troll for some extra muscle and even toss a (somewhat) willing volunteer across the field. As I build up each of my Blood Bowl teams, I want to add some of the special team players to add some fun to the games. I had fun painting him to a higher standard than the Orc players and testing a few techniques. Building and Prep This model was probably the craziest I have done regarding odd pieces for a single character model. As I try to get a few projects off my painting table, I knocked out the Blood Bowl tokens for both the Dwarf and Orc teams. I wanted them to match the players, but still be identified as tokens, as in mostly metal. Since I have now finished the Orc Team, The Mighty Squigs, and the Dwarf Team, The Golden Diggers, I figured I should get their tokens done as well. The idea to glue the tokens to the bases originally came from Scott on Twitter (@ryglore), and Thor (@Thor_Thorison) added the idea of gluing the coins as well. Having the tokens glued to a base should make it much easier to move around and not lose the tiny balls. It should also be fun having the coins stand up on the sidelines. Orc Blood Bowl Tokens For my Orc team, I painted the purple and orange over random armor plates and icons. This was fitting for the Orc feel, and I carried it over to the tokens. Some WIP Shots and Slowing Things Down (for now)

Between the reemergence of the sun, writing books, and chasing after two little boys, I have realized that I need to slow some things down. But part of that slow down is to make sure the articles I publish here are not rushed or forced. So with that said, let’s check out what is on Joe’s painting table first and get back to the boring blog stuff after. WIP Blood Bowl With two Blood Bowl teams completed (Orcs and Dwarves), I had turned to the balls and tokens so that I could get a fully painted game in. As with many things on my painting table, I got started and then distracted. At this point, both teams (and the human team) are mounted to bases and primed. The ball mark, the one meant to fit in each base, is press-fit into a spare base. All the others are glued down. After a few last sprints, I have finally finished my Dwarf Blood Bowl team, the Golden Miners.  These were a great set of miniatures, and in many ways, a much nicer set than the start box models. I’ll talk more about what I liked about this kit at the end of the post. I also linked the tutorials I’ve already put together for the team below. Let me know what you think of the team. Dwarf Blood Bowl Team Here is the whole Golden Miners team on the pitch. The Dwarven Slayers are clearly the most dynamic set of miniatures in the set. You can also see that for this duo and the Blitzers below, the kit came with two sets of heads. You can’t argue with their beards though. And here are those Blitzers. Clearly the heavy hitters of the team, they have a bit bigger armor plating and a hand guard bordering on a knuckle blade (no weapons in Blood Bowl of course!). The final specialist on the team are the two runners. …

In my excitement to get a set of Blood Bowl teams finished, I painted up two of the Dwarf players: a blocker and a Slayer. Given they are a fantasy sports team, I used bright yellow and blue for their armor. Here is how I am painting the dwarf blood bowl team. As with my Orc team, I painted them to be quick so that I can finish the team quickly. Yellow would seem to be an odd choice for a quick scheme, but WarColours One-Coat Yellow made it simple. You can check out the color list at the bottom of the post. Dwarven Blocker I love the look of the Dwarven Blood Bowl players. They are tough and squat but are distinct from mail-clad warriors. They also have a nice balance between ornate armor and flat panels for decals. The long beards and braids add movement and regalness to them even if their bellies hang out a bit. I attempted to paint the blue gems as sapphires, which I think worked out fairly well. Troll Slayer The Troll …

While I didn’t finish them for Squaduary as I had pledged, I finally finished all twelve of the Orc Blood Bowl players of The Mighty Squigs. Who says you haven’t seen a purple orc! As I currently don’t have time for games of 40k, I find that board games have been easier to get the family involved. Blood Bowl fits this perfectly. I think I could even talk my dad into a match since he is a huge football fan. When it came time to which team to paint first, it was simply a matter of which team looked like more fun. And what is more fun than orcs? (though I keep wanting to spell them orks!) Whenever I start a new faction, I look at what colors I haven’t painted and what would look good on these models. I hadn’t painted any armies with purple, and I figured they would look pretty good on an orc’s green. Armed with my handy color wheel, I found that to finish the complimentary color trifecta I needed …

Catching Up – Squaduary, Posts, and Looking Ahead

You know those crappy weeks where Real Life ™ destroys any hobby or personal time? Yeah, that has been the last two for me as I put it way too many hours at work to get projects completed. Finally wrapped up on Friday, only to come down with the flu. Whoa is me right? Anyway, you came here for the hobby, and while it’s been super quiet for me, I do have some updates, news, and looking ahead. Squaduary – Fail (but barely) First, February I was supposed to complete the Ork Blood Bowl team for Squaduary. I was off to a great start with having half the team highlighted. After getting the highlights on, I was really happy with the purple and orange scheme. I was waiting to do weathering and the base once the whole team was completed. Over the weekend I was able to get the other half base coated and washed (though I forgot the metal bits). This was great progress, but still long ways off from completion. With it being the …

Squaduary Week 2 – Half of ork team almost done

Short post for today but wanted to share some my updates on my Ork Blood Bowl team for week Squaduary Week 2. The first half of the team is almost finished with all the highlights. After highlighting the orange towards yellow, it works a lot better with the purple armor. I did finish the middle lineork as you can see below and on the rest, I only have the purple and black left to finish. I haven’t done any weathering or the base yet as I am going to wait until the whole team is ready so they look uniform. The next two weeks are looking super busy at work so it might be a bit quiet from me. But I do have a couple of guest posts lined up thanks to the awesome Mr. Pink and Rory. Hopefully, I can still sneak some painting in to relax in the evenings.

Already making progress on my Squaduary pledge and have an update on my Blood Bowl Ork Team WIP. As mentioned in my last WIP update, I wanted to paint them with purple armor and decided that orange would be a good spot color. At this point, I have half the team base coated and washed with brown. They look rough right now, and I hate showing this stage of painting, but as part of Squaduary, I need to show some updates right? So while this week of Squaduary was supposed to be build week, I already had the team built up and primed. So between the head start I already had and wanting to get the Stompa done this month as well, I have been plowing ahead. Colors: All colors are Vallejo Game Color.
