Tyranid Warrior of Behemoth

Tyranid Warrior Brood

Ok so that teaser post was a while back now, blame it on Real Life ™. But anyway, here are some more units for Hive Fleet Behemoth, this time a (now old) Tyranid Warrior Brood to lead the little gaunts into battle. Each is armed with the classic scything and death spitters to give a well rounded battle field role of longish range shooting with an extra attack in close combat. While the lack of the special weapon gives it a lack of punch, it also helps cut down on the point cost – which makes this a great throw-away leader unit if needed. This is one of my favorite aspects of the Tyranids, in that you can see the hunger and drive in each of the units. From the snarling faces to the forward lunge it is clear they are trying hard to get forward into the enemy. This view shows the contrast between the deep, smooth(ish) red and the high-contrast blue of the carapace. I really wanted an army that sticks out from the table top …

Mentor Legion Drop Pods

So I intend to build out the whole second company’s troop squads with drop pods, and since I have two squads done, it is only fitting I finish two drop pods. When I built them I did it in three pieces: the bottom with the doors, the fins connected to the top engine, and the center comms/seats. This allowed the center section to attach to the fins and all drop into the base when I wanted, or to take apart to paint. This was also my first attempt at airbrushing and while it gave me a cleaner white blend, I feel like I spent a great deal of time applying masking tape and then peeling it off. The first is Triumph armed with the simple bolter. For the army badges I used the ones that came with the kit and just cut off the existing mold. Since these are issued to the second company, I needed some yellow somewhere so went for the badge/button on each restraint. The second drop pod is Exultant with the …

Mentor Legion Ironclad Dreadnought

Ironclad Dreadnought of the Mentor Legion

So after deciding to build up my Mentor Legion last fall, I bought the Space Marine mega force, which along with the battle force and the last two starter kits worth of marines in my closet, gives me nearly enough marines to build a company. To round out all those foot troopers, I need some big guns and fists. This is where the wonderful Ironclad Dreadnought comes in. It may have not been my first choice for awesome marine models, but since it came along with the mega force, I might as well put him to work. On this model I also was trying out some of the weathering powders for both the model and the base. I had bought the set from Forge World as well as the Master Class book and was anxious to give it a try. They are a bit difficult to get into place, but I feel it gives a better blend when you mix the colors before setting them. The model also includes a few custom purity seals to help …

Mentor Legion Chaplain

Another HQ from the limited edition of Dark Vengeance, this is  Oldss Knirror, Mentor Legion Chaplain. When the limited edition was announced, this was the reason I jumped on it. While I haven’t been a fan of the other Chaplains, the billowing smoke from this guy gave it another level of sinisterness! Before getting started, I planed out what areas would be the green and red for the Mentor Legion, and what would be the black and white of the Chaplain. Leaving the robes white helped breakup all the other colors.   Very little was done to the model other than removal of most of the Dark Angel markings and the addition of the Mentors shoulder marking (another press mold). To do the Mentor Legion icon the whole shoulder pad details were removed and the press mold used to create the eagle head. I then took thin plastic strips to recreate the border. The edges were cleaned up with green stuff and the purity seal on the corner actually covers where I chipped a bit too …

Iron Warriors Rhino #2 - Done - Front

Iron Warriors Rhino 2 Done

Finished the third and final (for now) Rhino for my Iron Warriors army (see the first and second here). This one I tried a few new things. The first is the scratched metal. I tried using an old, terrible brush and splayed the bristles to create parallel streaks. I don’t think they all work out well, but it is something to build off of. The second is the free-hand Chaos star on the top hatch. I took the design from one I found in the 4th edition Codex showing the dual rings and 3d shape. I don’t think I pulled it off how I wanted, but for a first attempt, I’m happy with it. For this tank, I decided to put the stripes on the outer faces of the smoke stacks. Keeping it simple was needed to retain the tank from becoming too busy with the start, chain and skulls and havoc launcher. And here is all three in their finished states (click for a bigger picture!). I have a couple of random projects I …

How to Paint Iron Warriors

How to Paint Iron Warriors a Painting Tutorial and Guide

The Iron Warriors were my first 40k army. I picked them in part because they had a simple painting guide int he 3rd edition Codex. Both my painting skills, as well as the hobby, have changed since then. But here is my updated guide to how to paint Iron Warriors. I’ve broken down how I paint Iron Warriors in six detailed sections on the specific parts of the model. How to Paint Iron Warriors Part 1: The Metals Following on my step-by-step paint guides for my Sorcerer and Fabius Bile I figured it was time to do one for the bread and butter of my army: the Iron Warrior. I’ve broken this down into multiple parts to give more detail in each step. So first up is the metals. This is the prominent feature of any Iron Warrior: iron/silver armor and gold trim. It is also the messiest stage which is why I always do it first. Step 1: Primer I always prime my Iron Warriors black. If anyone has tried to paint metallic over …

Warsmith Built and Primed

I’ve had this model since Christmas and have been trying to figure out how to turn the WFB Khorne Lord on Juggernaut into a mighty Warsmith of the Iron Warriors. The model as sculpted is a terrific looking model but the challenge was to make it look like it could fit into the 41st millennium. In the end I replaced the arms with CSM arms, added a CSM head and backpack and re-sculpted the cloak to fit the backpack. The power weapon is a combination of a CSM banner pole and a giant axe from the WFB Chaos Knights. The pictures are a bit hard to make out the detail due to the black primer but I am excited to start painting. Work on this will be interleaved with painting my hoard of Traitor Guard but I will continue to post pictures of the progress.

Troop Squad Three Done (with pictures!)

Finished up another troop squad of Chaos Space Marines for my Iron Warriors. This squad is wielding two melta-guns and led by a crazy, plasma gun and power fist loaded champion. Although this makes the champion a bit on the expensive side, he is invaluable when it comes to taking out armored dudes, armored tanks, or monstered fools. Unlike my other troop squad, these guys are fully finished. The icon needs no extra painting and the XIVs are all done. ~created this post a few weeks back but forgot to publish it!

Chaos Titan Update (With Pictures)

So here are the promised pictures of my WIP Chaos Warhound Titan. The plans were from the bwc-archive Yahoo Group. I’ve been using various thicknesses of plastic card, foam board and plastic strips. I’ve done some sketching on the model with a Sharpie to get an idea of markings and adjustments to the model. So far it is really sturdy (and heavy…) so I’m not too worried about it getting knocked around in a game (unlike a paper version). The back took some work as the paper templates had nothing on the back side. I liked the look of the pipes on the Forge World model and imitated that. Also the vents were built one fin at a time because I couldn’t find anything that fit correctly. The engine top is from the Manufactorium set cut down to fit inside. This idea was from a project being done on dakka dakka. The wire grid is wielded metal fencing. The top is simply set into place so I can easily access the engine when I start …

Defiler Pictures

Finally, here are the pictures of my Iron Warrior Defiler. I entered this two weeks ago in a painting competition at my local GW store. This didn’t place, but I had a great time painting it (and the competition gave me a good excuse to finish it!). I didn’t do much conversion to the model, but I did build up a base for it from an old CD. Now that this model is finally built and painted I need to get him into a game and blow away all those silly loyalists! The guns are magnetized so if I later decide to go dual close combat arms or replace the flamer with a havoc, it will be a snap I also tried to magnetize the torso to the legs but it was too heavy for my little magnets so I had to pin it. The top still comes off for storage and transportation, but it can’t rotate during a game. The base is an old CD that I glued a layer of pink Styrofoam onto. …
