Dark Elf Master

Dark Elf Masters

Dark Elf MasterMay I now introduce you to my Dark Elf army. When I first got back into the hobby a few years back the Dark Elves were the army I started back up with since they had just been re-released. I choose to post the pictures of my Masters/Dreadlords first because it shows the improvement in my painting most distinctly. The new dreadlord model was one of the last I painted before moving back over to 40k where as the old dreadlord model was one of the first I painted when getting back into the army.

After taking the pictures I realized the base was never finished, he is now moved to the painting desk to remedy this. The weapon arm was swapped with the sword from the Cold One Knights set as I didn’t like the pose of the model with the hook weapon, I’m saving that for something else. I would often army this character with the Heart Seeker sword which is why I attempted to paint the sword with the red tone, not the greatest but it gets the job done.

Dark Elf Master

This is the old OOP model showing off the classic GW cartoonish sculpting. I think the most obvious change in painting skill is shown in the face of the two models. I still have a long way to go to paint great looking skin, but I’ve come a long way from Elf Flesh and Flesh Ink.

Mentor Legion Squad Finished

Mentor Legion Tactical Squad Finished – Part 6

Back to my Mentor Legion Tactical Squad that I’m working on as a test pilot program for some loyalists.

Mentor Legion Squad FinishedI was finally able to finish the last few details of the squad, including the base and matte varnish. I’m still playing around with some various backgrounds and picked up a pack of card stock of a couple shades of tan and gray. For this shot I used the dark gray card as the tans turned out too yellow and light. The only thing I don’t like about using the card stock is the lines, oh well. On to the individual shots:

The Captain pointing away with his yellow power sword and Mk. VII Armor.

Meltagun, note the extra targeting lenses, I always have issues hitting with meltaguns, so I figured it could only help right?Mentor Legion Trooper #3 with Meltagun

And the missile launcher. I added a bit of script to the tube to help it keep on track as well.Mentor Legion Trooper #4 with Missile LauncherWith these guys finished I think I am going to take a break from the Mentor Legion for now, the thought of painting up a battle force + ABR of these guys just tires me out! I have some Iron Warriors to finish up any way that have been patently awaiting the brush… stay tuned for those terminators and rhinos that have been sitting on my desk!

Thoughts, ideas or criticism? Let me know!

Mentor Legion Squad WIP – Part 5

Mentor Legion Squad WIP - Shoulder Details

Well I wasn’t able to finish the squad over the weekend, but I made some good progress. Until now I had been debating on how the Mentor Legion would show company/squad markings. They are a codex chapter but having different colored shoulder bands wouldn’t fit their look. I couldn’t find any thing scouring the interwebs so I decided on knee pads for the company color and Gothic numbering for the squad. This squad has been placed in the 2nd Company, 3rd Tactical Squad.

Mentor Legion Shoulder Pad 1

This guy was my first attempt at free handing the tactical arrow and it turned out terrible! So I opted for the half-cheating approach. I used the transfers from the kit for the inner white arrow and repainted the red edging and then repainted the white inner area. I used the transfers on the other tactical arrows as well with an over-paint to cover the decal.

Mentor Legion Shoulder Pad 2

I tried using the same technique for the Gothic number 3 but the decal was way too big for the curved surface and kept bulging. After trying to cut it apart and restitch it I gave up and decided to try the free hand approach. Overall I think they turned out pretty good.

Mentor Legion Squad WIP 5 - With Guns

I also did some work on the two missing guns which I painted separately and are now resting in their rightful holders. I am now down to finishing the metal areas, a little armor damage and the bases.  Stay tuned!

Mentor Legion Squad WIP – Part 4

Mentor Legion Squad WIP - Whites Done

Well I was finally able to get all the white done on this small squad. I think the last two guys got a little rushed in my anxiousness to get them done, but overall they seem to match up pretty well. Now with the white done there is little left to do other than details: the aquilas, purity seals, squad markings, and the bases. Hopefully I can get these done over the weekend.

I also tried a couple different background for the photo shoot as white models on a white background don’t work all that well. For both of these shots I grabbed a nearby t-shirt and crumpled it up as the backdrop.

What do you guys think about the different backgrounds? I am also going to try out a dark, textured paper somewhat like what Massive Voodoo uses.

Rhino of 14th Grand Company

Iron Warrior Rhinos – WIP

The ever faithful Rhinos! These are 3 of the 4 rhino transports currently possessed by the 14th Grand Company with the 4th being an ancient piece needing some fierce care before being shown to the public.

Rhino #1 of 14th Grand Company

All three are in various states of near-done. Mostly it is the various copulas that need to be finished and details added.

Rhino #2 of 14th Grand Company

Oh, and this one is now missing the roof, some how got left at the LFGS and never found, teaches me to not just seal it up and hide the inside.

Rhino #2 of 14th Grand Company

I made heavy use of the washes for all three tanks, perhaps too heavy. I wanted to give a worn, weathered look which is often hard for ‘silver’ areas as they don’t have paint chips. Instead they came off a bit blotchy and may need some touch ups… we’ll see.

Mentor Legion Squad WIP – Part 3

Mentor Legion Trooper WIP

So the white armor is takes a while to do… After painting this guy’s base coat I realized that to take full advantage of the paint mix I needed to complete him before moving on. I think his armor looks smoother than the Sargent but doesn’t show the same depth and shading. win some, lose some yeah?

Anyway the steps I used to paint the white. I started with mixing 1:1:1:5 mix of graveyard earth, codex grey, skull white and water. I used this to pretty much cover everything except the recesses in the armor or where it met other colors. I then added more and more white and water and added about 6 or so layers focusing more on the ridges and ‘tops’ of the white areas. I finally used pure skull white to highlight the hard, upper edges.

Mentor Legion WIP - desk shot

Here’s a shot of my messy desk area. In the background you can see some Iron Warrior Terminators awaiting finishing touches on their bases. Center back is my really basic ‘light box’ to take WIP shots – yes it really is copy paper leaning against the wall 🙂 You can see the missile launcher guy is up next as he stands on my improve ‘handle’ made from an old paint pot and sticky tac.

Any comments on how the white looks would be appreciated, I always like learning new things.

Mentor Legion Squad WIP – Part 2

Mentor Legion Sargent - HeadAlthough I was hoping to get some feedback on my first cut at my Mentor Legion Squad before continuing I decided to press on and finish the squad.

As I picked up my paintbrush I realized that this was the first time I had done any painting for nearly 3 months! And man could I tell, my hands were somewhat shaky, the paint wasn’t smooth and my hands kept cramping up. After a few sessions I was able to get some good progress on the squad and regain some of the painting mojo.

I almost didn’t post this next picture as it looks like a elementary school kid slapped the some paint on so that they could be played in a store… ugh. But oh well, here is some WIP shots of the squad:

Mentor Legion WIP Part 2 - Base coat

Here I blocked out the different colors to both get an idea of what goes where, as well as cover up all the white primer in all the little nooks without worrying about getting paint where it doesn’t belong. Colors are pretty simple: Orkhide Green, Mechrite Red, Graveyard Earth, Tausept Ochre.

Mentor Legion WIP Part 2 - Greens

Next up I painted the highlights on the green. I do this next as I find it is easy to touch up darker colors rather than the white armor. The green was layered from Orkhide Green, to Goblin Green,  to Scorpion Green, and finally Skull White on the extremes. The areas were then washed with Thraka Green wash to tie the shades together.

Mentor Legion WIP Part 2 - RedsThe red areas were next. Starting with the Mechrite base I layered Blood Red, to Blazing Orange, then  Golden Yellow. A small amount of black wash was used to darken the recesses.

Next up will probably be the white armor… this part will take a while…

Lizardmen Salamander

Lizardmen Salamanders

Lizards, check…

lizards prodding larger lizards into battle, check

those same larger lizards can breath fire, CHECK!

These are all the reasons to love the salamanders, well that and they are actually pretty darn good game wise too. The breath weapons just got a boost with 8th edition as well now that every thing is hit that touches the flame template, and with the increase in large units this could potentiality do monstrous damage!

Lizardmen Salamander Squad

I almost always run the unit as a pair to get redundancy in shooting as well as close combat. Inevitably one of the salamanders will decide to get hungry at the wrong moment and eat a skink instead of frying up that nice, juicy enemy unit, but hopefully both won’t decide to do the same and some fire can still be thrown.

I often spend the extra 10 points to add two more handlers as well since the pesky salamanders seem to take a liking to skink flesh. Fortunately it only takes 1 skink to keep both beasts in line so even if I lose the other 7 the unit can continue on.
Lizardmen Salamander

Painting wise, I was inspired by one of the salamanders in the army book that was black with yellow scales, but I wanted it to fit closer to the red scales of the rest of my army. I decided to go with a dark purple/black body and red-orange-yellow scales. I think it gives them a fierce, dangerous look, which is very fitting and contrasting to the light blue, frail bodies of the skinks.

Mentor Legion Sargent - Head

Another Side Project: Mentor Legion – WIP

Mentor Legion Sargent - HeadA long while back my FLGS was doing a challenge to paint a unit from every Space Marine Chapter on the poster that GW put out a few years back. I looked into my bitz boxes and realized I had quite a few loyal space marine pieces that I needed to put a use to and decided to jump in. I wanted to chose a chapter that would be fun to paint, but require me to stretch my painting skills. With this requirements, the Mentor Legion caught my eye as they are a not-often played army (at least from what I’ve seen) and had white armor (which I heard was difficult to paint well).

To further challenge my self I decided that I would minimize my use of washes on this army and work on blending and layering. I decided to start with the sergeant the squad as the test model since it is a bit more ok if he stands out slightly from the rest of the squad.

Mentor Legion Sargent

I think the white armor came off a bit too brown and streaky up close, but comes off well as a table top model. I’m also not so sure about the yellow power sword, the idea was to tie it in with the chest eagle and eyes but it doesn’t look as striking like a power sword should. At this point I just need to finish his base and add some company/squad markings and he is done.

Mentor Legion Tactical Squad - WIP

Here is the rest of the small, test squad I had started, but with Real Life (I think one of you bloggers has that copyrighted, hope you don’t sue me 😉 ) I had to put them aside for a time. They are now sitting on my painting table awaiting my motivation.

Please give me any feedback (negative or positive) on the sarge so I can continue to improve my style and technique with the other 4 in this squad.

Lizardmen Stegadon – old school style!

Lizardmen Stegadon - OOP Model - Left Side

Some more old-school lizard goodness! Ranking as the hardest to-hold-together model, the OOP Stegadon displays the main of the issues with metal models: size = cost, higher cost = less margin, less margin = unhappy stock holders. Once I get around to buying the new plastic kit I’ll have to take a picture of them side-by-side but I am willing to guess that the old stegadon is at least half the size of the new one.

Lizardmen Stegadon - OOP Model - Right Side

Then you have the howdah, not only is it so small it is hard to fit even 5 skinks in there, but it connects to the stegadon at a very small point, causing it to break off time, and time again… which is part of the reason I hardly ever play with the model.

Lizardmen Stegadon - OOP Model - Front

Tactic wise I have had mixed results with the Stegadon in 7th edition and not sure how well it will work at all in 8th with the changes to many of the rules. The basic stegadon (which is the only one I’ve used) is simply a battering ram. Sure it has some shooting but with only BS3 and S5 for the great bow it is not a real threat, though 2D6 blow pipe shots could put the hurt on. The real use for this though is charging it head long into a unit and hope that between impact hits, the 4 S5 hits from the stegadon and the 5 skinks (and now the stop attack as well) it can do enough hurt to compensate for any rank, standard, and wounds the enemy can do.

Saurus Unit Champion

Saurus Warriors – The Lizardmen Pillars

Saurus Unit Champion

The Saurus Warriors are the backbone of the Lizardmen army. They are tough and they are mean. With toughness of 4 and a 4+ save they can take pretty good beating and even once they do it is hard to fail a leadership test of 8 using the cold blooded rule. With two attacks at strength 4 they are also a great unit on the offence as well.

I usually run two units of 20 with full command which acts as the focal point of my army. They attract the attention of the larger enemy units while my Skinks run around and pick off monsters and the like while the cold one calvary take a flank.

Currently both of my units are armed with only hand weapons but for 20 more points I could add 4 more attacks from the unit, something I’ll have to consider for the next unit build.

Saurus Warrior Unit

Saurus Warrior Unit

One of the things that I found really helpful for my units is to magnetize the base which keeps the banner bearer from falling over and troops from flying about when I remove casualties and catch the tail of the warrior in front. I’ll have to put together  a quick tutorial in the future but I simply buy a magnetic sheet that they use for promotional fridge magnets. I glue one sheet into the movement tray and cut the other to fit in the bottom of each base. Care needs to be taken here in that if the magnets are the wrong direction they don’t attract correctly.

Iron Warriors Vindicator

Iron Warriors Vindicator

Iron Warrior Vindicator Gunner
So this is one that I’ve have done for a long time but seem to have failed to capture it on film.

Personally I really like the vindicator and put it in nearly every army list. Sure it is a one-trick pony with its one big gun but no matter what it hits, it is gonna hurt.

In objective missions I’ll often leave the vindicator in reserve to give the enemy time to move towards my objectives. Once the tank rolls on it should be able to find a nice juicy target to demolish.
